FROM CLASSROOM TO HOME
June.27.2019
That's it folks! The school year is over and I would like to thank you all for your support and engagement. Have a wonderful summer!
June.24.2019
With only 3.5 days left of school please send me an email or a note in your child's agenda if your child will be missing any school days. I know some families are already heading out for summer break but I would like to make sure that your child has all their belongings sent home with them.
Reminder that we are planning on heading to the spray park tomorrow afternoon. Please send your child's swimsuit and an extra change of clothes tomorrow. Please keep in mind that sunscreen must be applied at home before school or at the spray park by the child (no adult may assist as it is considered "medication"). As well, students may not share sunscreen or bug spray with other classmates or friends. Please remind your child about proper use for these products.
If the weather does not cooperate we will be having a movie day with our other fellow grade 1 classes.
If you have any questions please feel free to email me.

Please help avoid hurt feelings as this is Kindness Week by sending a card for each member of our class. I will be sending a class list of names home with your child on Monday, February 11th. We have 14 students that will be participating in the Valentine's Day Class Party. In keeping with the Kindness Week theme I encourage your child to create handmade Valentine's Day cards. Why? Well...
- A handmade card says "I took the time to create this card for you".
- When you make a card you are actually making a work of art.
- They are unique!
- Each card your child makes helps improve their writing skills.
- A handmade is like a hug.
Thank you for helping your child prepare for this day. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Home Reading...
I hope that the first NEW Home Reading books went well! I am still working with each student to find their good fit book so please bear with me as books are coming home. Do your best to work with your child through the book and use those teachable moments such as looking up new words or finding the definition to encourage great reading skills. Finding a good fit book that boosts their confidence and allows for growth can be challenging.
Also, just a reminder please do not draw or write in the Home Reading books as many of these books I have purchased myself and would like to keep them in good condition so that other students and families can enjoy them too. As well the kiddos are very much "monkey see, monkey do" and if they see you doing it, they will likely try it as well. Thank you for your understanding.

Hello Families!
We will now be starting our NEW HOME READING PROGRAM using French books from the class. Please try to set aside some time every day to read with your child. Your child will practice reading the book before they bring it home. We will begin with one book and may increase to two later this year. Your child needs to return their book each Wednesday for exchange. Once returned, the book will be exchanged and sent home as soon as possible (by Friday). Please ensure that your child reads to you at least 3 different times.
Things to keep in mind when reading with your child...
The book and reading log are to be kept in the Home Reading duo-tang and returned in the agenda bag once read.
Your support with your child's reading is greatly appreciated. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Merci!

- Please have your child "track" with a finger under the written text. This encourages focus on individual words and sounds.
- After your child has read his or her book to you, please record the date, title of the book and then sign or initial the reading log.
- There is a space for a comment or question if you like. At times, I may also write a comment of something your child is working on or doing really well.

Welcome back! Please check the Peek at Our Learning tab as well as below for upcoming events and information.
This week students received their first French spelling words (dictée). A newsletter has gone home this week explaining all the details. If you have misplaced or would like another copy of the newsletter please see the attached file below.
Each Tuesday your child will receive a NEW spelling list that will be glued into their agenda next to that day. He/she is to study the list with the help from an adult. A dictée practice booklet has now been sent home. Feel free to use this dictée book for practicing. Please return the dictée book every Tuesday, as it is where your child's score will be noted, along with any words they have misspelled.
I will be sending an audio recording of the dictée list through Fresh Grade, therefore if you have not signed up this would be a good time to do so as it is much easier to share videos this way.

Thank you to all the families for taking the time to attend our recent parent- teacher interviews. I appreciate your time and effort for meeting with me. We are all working for the same results ...a positive and successful school year for your child. If you have ANY further questions ...please feel free to contact me! Also, please check out the newest tab called "Toolbox" on this site found in the drop down menu tab or click here to take you to the page.
December is just around the corner please have a look at the sign-up sheet to bring snacks/treats for the Christmas Party! If there is not enough interest to help out/ sign-up we will have to cancel the party. Please email me if you are able to assist in any way. Thank you.
In the brown envelops that you received at parent teacher interviews were the scholastic flyers. With the business of Christmas order shipping please submit your scholastic orders by Monday, December 3rd in order to allow for enough time to arrive before we leave for the Christmas Break. Don't forget you can also submit your orders online and view a larger selection of books available as well.
Thursday, November 29th is Hot Lunch! Please double check to see if you submitted an order for your child. Don't forget to pack additional healthy snacks in your child's lunches for those recess times!
Round #2 Enrichment (Sharpen the Saw) begins Friday, November 30th! The students ranked their choices last week and will find out their one option that they will get to participate in for the second round on Thursday.
Grade 1 Options:
1. Card Games
2. Sensory Letters
3. Winter Crafts
4. Acts of Kindness
5. Constructions
There are a number of students who do not have a proper pencil sharpener with an enclosed container to collect the pencil shavings. Please check with your child and send a proper pencil sharpener to school. They are using the classroom one A LOT which is starting to be a distraction to others who are working because they are stopping to chat along the way to the sharpener. Please try not to purchase the one from the Dollarstore as they do not last that long. Thank you!

PEANUT/ NUT ALLERGY INFO ~ PLEASE READ!!
Many have asked about bringing peanut butter to school for lunches. With recent information about our surrounding classrooms, I wanted to clarify a few things. In the school, there are students who are severely allergic to peanut/nut allergies. Your child may be friends with another child in the school who is allergic, thus I am asking for your assistance in providing these students with a safe learning environment. That being said there is no one in our classroom who has allergies to any peanuts/ nuts but since lunch is eaten in the classroom and we do have lunch leaders and other visitors who come in, it is advised by the school that the classroom be peanut/ nut aware. There are classrooms in our hallway who have students with these severe allergies. Thus I think that it is best to not bring any peanut/nut products into the classroom at these times to help maintain safety in the classroom and school.
As for class parties, these are supervised by myself and any parent volunteers so I believe we can make sure that the students are all washing their hands after eating any treats that may contain nuts. It is only our class in the room celebrating so those students wanting to bring special homemade treats please label food items especially those containing peanuts/nuts. This helps any staff or parents present on these days.
Thank you for your cooperation.

This week is another short week for families. The weather is supposed to be wonderful so enjoy the long weekend and the sunshine!!
Please make sure that Home Reading is being completed each week along with the comment section on the yellow sheets in the duotang. The more your child is reading to you, the more knowledge they can absorb. It is important that your child learns to follow words across the page from left to right, and turn pages which are pre-reading skills that will benefit them to become better readers. Children who enjoy reading not only do better in language and literacy subjects, but in all of the subjects as well. Reading out loud exposes your child to vocabulary on different topics, which means they hear words or phrases which they may not hear otherwise in their daily lives especially because they are learning a second language, reading is an easy way to help their language skills and is important to develop their fluency.
Each home reading book has a QR code on it. These QR codes are used to educate, inform and assist you and your child with French pronunciation. A big thank you to the French Immersion grade 1 teachers at Nicholas Sheran for creating this tool!
How to Scan a QR Code:
1. Open the QR Code Reader on your phone, tablet or iPad (Apple products use the standard camera feature while Android or Google products may require you to download a QR app).
2. Hold your device over a QR Code so that it's clearly visible within your devices screen. Two things can happen when you correctly hold your device over a QR Code.

This week's agenda...
Monday, October 15th-
**Store Day!- Each Monday is a shopping day. During the last block of the day, the students are able to spend their punch cards, unless they want to save them until the next shopping day. The punch cards are to replace money to keep students from finding and keeping someone else’s misplaced or lost bills. There are $5, $10, $15 and $20 reward options. Some Mondays there may even be a SALE on select items! We have done this a couple of times now and they see quickly that they don't want to miss out and they really strive for good behaviour so they can fill their punch cards for the next store day.
Students must be in attendance to shop at the store, just like in real life, the store has business hours. Once they spend their full punch card, they go into my smiley face bucket for a monthly draw for a prize out of the surprise bin.
My reward systems are all about choice! I provide the options, but ultimately it is their choice to spend or save and each action has a consequence. They can save, save, save but may miss out on the surprise bin because they have to spend their punch card to be a part of that reward. Their name may never be drawn from the bucket, but it is their choice to participate. On the other hand, if they spend, spend, spend they may not ever get to purchase a reward that is a $20 value. The ultimate lesson here is that not everybody "wins" and that we can't get upset but rather congratulate our friends and keep smiling.
Please, parents, ask your child about their punch cards and the rewards they may be saving up for or have already purchased. They have all worked hard for these rewards!

- Alberta Health Services Oral Health Program due October 18th
Please have a look at the October calendar.
Every Wednesday the grade 1s go to the community room for NHL (Nikki's Habit Learner's). This weeks topic may have left some students feeling a little uncomfortable after the presentation. Ms. Bigelow led a session introducing Orange Shirt Day. She talked about her First Nations heritage and then showed a video of the book "I am Not a Number". Please take this opportunity to discuss reconciliation and residential schools with your child bearing in mind that this will take some time for them to fully understand. Please reassure your child that this happened along time ago so that on October 1st (Orange Shirt Day) they are more comfortable and are aware of the day. Thank you.

We have a new rewards system in the classroom! The kiddos have received a punch card where when they are excelling in the classroom such as working hard, staying focused, being respectful, speaking French and being a team leader will get their card hole punched by myself. Each Monday, they are allowed to shop at my "store" where they can "buy" with their hole punches a number of rewards that are sorted from $5 (5 hole punches) to $20 (20 hole punches). They have the opportunity to save up and purchase a larger reward or purchase a number of smaller rewards, this is up to them to decide. That being said if you see them packing a stuffed animal in their backpack don't worry they have purchased that as a reward. If you have any questions please let me know.

Good Evening,
I am sorry for the late post tonight but I can now say that we officially have new desks ready to go for tomorrow. YAY! This week is going to be another busy full week for the kiddos. On Tuesday a.m. we will be having a Fire Drill with the Lethbridge Fire Department. We will also be having a Lock Down drill Thursday a.m with the Lethbridge Police. We have gone over the expectations for both of these drills as a class and will be reviewing them again this week.
As a class, we are making a storybook about each colour of the rainbow. This week we will be doing red (rouge) and yellow (jaune). Please have your child find something at home that can fit in their backpacks to bring to school to draw for their story page. We will be doing a mini show and tell with these objects.
Please have their show and tell object for the following days:
*Tuesday -Red (rouge)
*Wednesday - Yellow (jaune)
On Friday a.m. we will be participating in the Terry Fox Run. Please make sure your child has dressed appropriately for the weather. Layers are best!!! Leading up to Friday's run the school will be collecting loonies/ toonies for donation. Please keep in mind that even though Friday's are a short day the kiddos are hungry and are needing snacks.
I will be posting more to Fresh Grade this week. If I have missed anything or you have any questions please let me know.
A demain!

We have been getting to know each other, learning the classroom and school procedures, and adjusting to being in school all day again!].
